Man City v Newcastle:
Gundogan made his return to City’s team as well as Grealish who picked up an assist for the first goal by Gvardiol. Every game week and win makes City look more and more like the title winners. Newcastle were poor during the first half with the only stand-out player being Joelinton.
City’s team are coherent and knows how to win, even with a rotated squad they were dominant throughout the first half which was expected against a team that is not of the same calibre as them in Newcastle United. The left side of City’s team was constantly creative, building up from the back through Gvardiol, Kovacic and Grealish which is the combo that led to the goal with Grealish’s darting run and cross to find Gvardiol.
Newcastle, specifically Gordon were able to capitalise on a mistake from Ederson conceding a penalty that should have arguably led to a red card not a yellow. However, City continued to put on the pressure with a lot of chances but Newcastle was able to hold out and save themselves some points with a defensive revival in the second half as well as a much-improved midfield.
Chelsea v Brighton:
The game began nervy for Chelsea with an early goal from impressive Brighton, however, star man Cole Palmer quickly reminded Brighton and the Premier League how good he is and scored his first goal off of an assist from Nicolas Jackson. Within 10 minutes and after 2 set pieces he was then able to score a perfect 30-minute hat trick, one being a beautiful free kick. Taking a 3-1 lead over Brighton. Chelsea fans will be impressed by how well their team has managed to perform given nerves about squad coherence however, it all seems to be working for the blues.
A goal from Brighton gave the Gulls hope of coming back however this was quickly squandered when the new and improved Jadon Sancho assisted Palmer’s 4th goal of the first half proving not only how good he is but that he and his team won’t stop fighting, he has also become the first PL player to score 4 goals in the first half. Big things for a young man.
Chelsea fans will be impressed by their team’s creativity and that they have been a much better team than last season, beginning to gel as a squad and fight out games to get the desired result. They will also be happy to see their star man Palmer performing at his best and if last season is any indication he isn’t going to slow down.
For Brighton fans it will be sad to see their team's streak coming to an end, however, they have done very well to be in the situation they are in and the season isn’t over yet. If they keep fighting how they have they could do very well in the Premier League this year.
Liverpool v Wolves:
It was an outstanding performance for Liverpool, with standout performances from the defence as well as there all you could want midfielder Gravenberch.
Their first goal came from a pinpoint corner cross from Jota against his former side to Konate with a pinpoint header to give the Reds the lead. He has begun to prove himself as a necessity on both ends of the field and is a poacher on corners as well as a potential future captain from the back.
However, this wasn’t the end for Wolves and Konate’s necessity was proven with his mistake leading to Ait-Nouri being able to capitalise on a through ball that Larsen couldn’t.
Liverpool regained the lead quickly with a goal from the spot by the ever-consistent Salah and he gave his team the lead again. This has brought Liverpool to the top of the table and the Reds will be very happy with their performance so far this season as they have never been behind and not fought for the win, which they showed today. They, like City, are an experienced team and they know how to win.
Tottenham vs United:
Within the first two minutes of the game centre-back Van de Ven made a darting run, using his electric pace to break into Manchester United’s defence and cross it to Brennan Johnson who scored another goal in his incredible run of form. Spurs continued to attack but United did begin to attack, however, the majority of the first half was spent in the home team's half. A few of their attacks were beautiful and Brennan Johnson was the most active, continuing his form and was on the end of some brilliant chances.
The game only got worse for Manchester United when Fernandes went in with a high boot on Maddison attempting to stop him through midfield. A foolish tackle took a game that was already difficult into an almost impossible task as they attempted to fight back in the second half.
This is something they failed to do within 2 minutes of the game restarting with Johnson playing a key role in getting the ball into the box which allowed Kulusevski to capitalise on a deflected ball slipping it past Onana the implications of the goal could be massive not only for the game but for the locker rooms of both teams following the game.
Solanke scored the final of three goals capitalising on a headed-on pass from Pape Sarr from a set piece. It was a disappointing game for Manchester United fans whose team has had a very disappointing start to the season.
Spurs fans will be happy the team are back on its feet and continuing the run of form from their mid-week game and for the Reds, they will be disappointed that their team hasn’t picked up the form given their history, but that isn’t the team they are now.
